GIFT IDEA: A SQUARE METER OF FOREST IN AUSTRALIA
Two Dutchmen offer pieces of land for sale in the east of Australia. With the revenue they want to recover the original vegetation in the de-forested area. For $ 39,90 anyone can buy a square meter of ground in Queensland, near the village of Tara. The twelve hectares large area, is now still owned by the two Dutchman, M. Pors and R. Pieterse. Together they founded Green Globe in 2000, a small company that fights for the preservation of nature and the recovery of the bio-diversity. The Tara project is the first initiative of Green Globe. If this project succeeds, more pieces of land will be bought and re-forested. The idea is simple: Green Globe divides the purchased areas in lots of one square meter, the so called GreenPoints. Through Internet interested persons can buy such a piece of land. "It's funny to have your own square meter of ground in Australia, or to give it to someone else. We hope with this way, to reach a new kind of audience, those people who normally don't do much for the nature", clarifies Pors. The buyers of a GreenPoint receive an ownership certificate. The don't have to bother with the maintenance and and taxes; this is done by Green Globe. Apart from consumers Pors also hopes to interest companies.
